Panarea Portraits – the people of the Aeolian Islands

I have been photographing the people of the island of Panarea for over 30 years. It started as a bit of fun, now it has become a real project which I know I will never stop doing.

The faces of the Aeolian Islanders have the sea, Sicily, the sun, the wind and time itself etched into their features, and for this reason they are amongst the most wonderful subjects you could ever hope to photograph.

This is the main street on the island of Panarea g

This is the main street on the island of Panarea going from the port to the northern hamlet of Iditella. The almost surreal landscape of cuboid houses amidst huge boulders with olive trees, lemon trees and flowering bougainvilleas is a feature of this pretty island, especially in Iditella, where you also get breathtaking views of the volcanic Stromboli. This was shot in late October, when the colours are perhaps at their most beautiful.

August at Lisca Bianca: Aeolian Island style summer fun. A favourite place for holidaying revellers, boats gather between the small uninhabited islands of Lisca Bianca and Bottaro, which I climbed to take this photo. Some of the most gorgeous underwater scenery is here, including volcanic vents.

Lose yourself in the languid rhythms of Mediterranean island life in this wonderful villa, Antika, which I photographed last month.

It’s on the island of Panarea, and belongs to good friends of mine who recently undertook this beautiful and poetic restoration. It’s now become a dream home and a perfect place to stay for anyone who wants to visit Panarea and the aeolian Islands. When, as the icy fingers winter start to grip you

When, as the icy fingers winter start to grip you tighter, do you start to think of the summer, to dream of long days out at sea in boats, of falling into the languid rhythms of island life, and to have nostalgia for the sights and sounds and smells and light of the summer?

For me it’s now. Once the clocks change, the evenings arrive so early, and the wooden jumpers and scarves come out, the urge to just be somewhere warm and sunny by the sea becomes increasingly strong.

Luckily the next few weeks I’ll be busy with work so my mind will be focussed elsewhere, but when I then go though my sprawling archive of Mediterranean images, the daydreaming starts again.

Here’s to keeping thoughts of the summer in our minds. Here’s to sunshine and colours and salty sunburnt skin and happy days filled with smiles as big as watermelons 🍉

Evening Panorama with Victoria Embankment, Blackfriars Bridge, St Pauls and The City.

This for me is one of the greatest views of London. Within this one panoramic scene are included many of the features that make this great city. The River Thames with the Victoria Embankment, Blackfriars Bridge, one of the most beautiful of the many bridges, the iconic Baroque masterpiece of St Paul’s, and the gleaming modernity of The City skyscrapers.
This panoramic view I captured on the 27th October 2023. It is an update from the same viewpoint as one of my best selling images, which I captured 11 years ago, almost to the day.

The clear air of a fresh autumn evening create fabulous conditions for photography. Like many if not all of my panoramas, I had planned this view for some time, and I waited for the right evening. This day it had rained quite a lot earlier, which is critically important to clear out the dust from the atmosphere. By afternoon the clouds had begun to clear, so I packed my camera bag and tripod and headed out. I was almost singing with joy as I walked from the underground station to my location, knowing the evening colours could be just perfect. Indeed they were!
