Today I was photographing in one of my favourite locations - Home House in London. it’s a place I go every year to photograph the wonderful decorations and flower arrangements of Rosemary Livingstone who turns the interiors into a wonderful display of festive fun and colours every Christmas time. this is a view from above of the spiral staircase which is one of the features of this beautiful early 18th century townhouse, designed by Scottish architect Robert Adam; one of the greatest exponents of the neo-classical era. Home House is also the place which houses my university when I was a student back in the 1980s - the Courtauld Institute of Art. Also famous, or rather infamous, for Anthony Blunt’s tenure as director for many years; one of the Cambridge four group of spies along with Kim Philby, Donald McLean and Guy Burgess. Orion, Mars and the Port of Panarea.

Last night I was out shooting the magnificent constellation of Orion. One of the great pleasures of the night sky as summer fades away into autumn is the awesome sight of this constellation, which only starts to appear around late September, as it rises above the eastern horizon after 6 months of not being visible. To me it is like seeing an old friend again.

Especially nice is the appearance of Mars gloriously glowing in its red light just above the head of Orion. Closer to the horizon is Sirius, Orion's dog, the brightest star in the night sky, and further left is Procyon, Orion's other dog, also one of the brightest stars of the heavens.

I created this composition as a blend of two images, one for the foreground with the very bright lights of the jetty of Panarea, far too bright to combine into a single view of the night sky, and another shot of the starry sky. This part I captured with a star tracker, which rotates your camera with the moving stars, thereby allowing you a much longer exposure to capture the faint stars in great detail with less noise and grain. I also used the Alyn Wallace Star Glow filter to enhance the brighter stars, making the constellation of Orion, and his faithful friend Sirius stand out against the background of millions of stars.

This timelapse I captured on the 29th October 2022. The afternoon had seen a series of huge eruptions of Stromboli, with a vast cloud of ash and smoke (see my last post). I had high expectations for the evening, so I set up my cameraon a terrace for what I hoped was a firework display in the night sky. Alas the volcanic activity abated, but it was still quite active as can be seen in this video, but the huge mushroom cloud had dispersed.
I captured this timelapse using a Nikon Z6 camera, with the 45mm f2.8 PC-E tilt shift lens, allowing me to capture more of the sky without any geometric distortions. Shutter was 10secs at f2.8, with a 12 second interval, set by the LRTimelapse Pro Timer 2.

Stromboli eruptions 29:10:2022

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Yesterday Stromboli was particularly active in the afternoon so I set up a couple of cameras on a terrace in Iditella and captured the couds of steam and ash coming out. Sadly the violent series of eruptions didn't last until night time, as at night violent eruptions like this are astonishing to experience, but I'm glad I got this display at least!

🇮🇹 Ieri pomeriggio Stromboli ha iniziato a sparare una serie di botte spettacolari. Mi sono piazzato su una terrazza ad Iditella e con 2 macchine fotografiche ho catturato questo timelapse. Purtroppo poi si è calmato; di sera la eruzioni così sono proprio stupende da vedere, ma non ieri, pure se ero pronto! Almeno questo video è uscito abbastanza bene.

Stromboli was extremely active this afternoon, so of course I timelapsed it, and I prepared for an evening shooting it too, with the stars in the night sky. Sadly the intense eruptions subsided over the course of the evening: nature can be, in fact always is unpredictable!

The evening ended up being just a pizza and a chat with my neighbour Massimo rather than a whole night excursion of shooting the volcano. I left the camera on his roof and just let it tick over by itself, then packed up by 10pm.

Here is a still from the shoot; hopefully the final timelapse sequence be interesting, the sky was clear and the stars sparkled, but the eruptions were few and far between. However there were some quite stunning outbursts: the full timelapse sequence is coming as soon as I've finished editing it, as will the afternoon's one too! Stay tuned!
