Portrait of the artist Leon Morrocco, RSA, RGI. Portrait of the artist Leon Morrocco, RSA, RGI. Scottish-Italian painter Leon recently asked me to take a series of pictures of him in his studio in North London both for him and also for a series of exhibitions in London and Edinburgh which will be held this summer to celebrate his 80th birthday this year. The centrepoint will be a major retrospective at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. (@royal_scottish_academy Leon has been a very close personal friend of me and my family since I was a child - his father the renowned artist Alberto Morrocco was also a dear friend of my parents. We share a deep love and close link to Italy, our mutual native homeland, and the joy and life and colour of Italy are evident in all of Leon’s paintings, including even those of other countries and places. This is one of the many portraits I took of him that day. I hope to have conveyed his sunny personality, his joie de vivre, the passion in his work. The joy of revelling in colour and bold forms and the sheer pleasure of his everyday narratives are evident features of his work, as in the great tradition of modern Scottish art, from the Colourists on. The sky and sea were very still last night, so I knew the dawn would be very likely spectacular, and I wasn't wrong! When the colours and light are so even, all I needed was a light touching up on Lightroom or Photoshop in the editing of this multishot panorama, here it is to share with you all, barely an hour after I captured it. Bougainvillea and Terrace, Panarea. One of my fav Bougainvillea and Terrace, Panarea. One of my favourite alleyways on Panarea, with a lovely little terrace whose columns frame the island of Dattilo. To get this shot I had to hold the camera above my head as high as I could, so it took quite a few attempts; not least to make sure I had the focus on the exact spot. I selected an f-stop of 5,6, not only as this is the sharpest aperture on my lens, but also so as to blur slightly the pink flowers closest to the camera at lower left, so as to lead the eye into the image. I also like to leave distant objects such as Dattilo here on the horizon slightly in soft focus, so as to imply distance and three dimensionality. These small things are totally impossible with an iPhone, in fact with anything less than a full frame camera or even better, medium format. Which is why I always carry around with me a heavy bag of equipment! Bougainvillea, House and Stromboli 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The sky has cleared up, the blue has returned, the colours lit up again. After bad weather, the air is so clear it feels you can touch the islands miles away. This little corner is a favourite spot of mine; I’m so glad the bougainvillea is in full bloom. What a sight. 🇮🇹 il cielo si è schiarito, il blu è tornato, i colori si sono accesi di nuovo. Dopo una perturbazione, l’aria è così chiara e nitida che sembra che si possono toccare le isolotte all’orizzonte. Questo scorcio è uno dei miei posti preferiti di Panarea, sono contentissimo che la buganvillea è in pieno fiore. This past weekend coincided with the Festa della R This past weekend coincided with the Festa della Repubblica, one of the most important days in Italy, and a holiday. As a consequence, many people decided to make the most of the hot weather and took off to visit the Aeolian islands. Panarea was full; everyone at sea enjoying the still sea and sizzling summer sun. This is the Cala del Morto, one of my favourite places.
