This expansive view of Mt Etna from the air stretching to Taormina I captured late one afternoon in summer when on a flight to Catania Airport. I love how the colours change on Etna from the yellows and oranges of the burnt fields with the searing Sicilian sun on the lower slopes, to the red and purple tones of the cooler higher altitudes, and the dark blues of the lava fields surrounding the crater at the top. Just to the right of centre is the town of Maletto, and in the far distance at left are the hills and the coastline surrounding Taormina. The 3,400m volcano of Mt Etna is the stunning and dominant geographical feature of the island of Sicily, and one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It never fails to fire up my sense of wonder and awe every time I fly past it.
