Palazzo Mattei is the most prominent of the houses owned by the Mattei family in Rome. It was designed by architect Carlo Maderno, and completed in 1618. The palazzo includes a stunning courtyard with ancient Roman sculptures. The Mattei family were amongst the most powerful and ancient noble families in Rome at the time. They had great interests in the arts and artists, were amongst the greatest collectors of the time. Ciriaco Mattei lived in this palazzo, and housed his art collection here: he was a close friend and patron of the painter Caravaggio, who is recorded as living here in 1601.
