A black and white panoramic image of Battersea Power Station as seen over the railway lines with light trails of a passing train. This is a view of the train tracks heading south over Grosvenor Railway Bridge over the River Thames. There is a clear view of the newly refurbished Battersea Power Station, along with the adjacent railway depot and apartment buildings. I had placed my camera on a tripod, waiting for the right moment when a train passed, so as to capture it, and then the other 6 or 7 shots either side that together constitute this multi-shot panorama. The light changes too quickly to capture the panorama first and then wait for a train to pass later in order to stitch it in – the light and colours would have been too different. You need quick reflexes, and experienced timing skills to capture on a 10 second exposure the right moment of the train passing. It took me several attempts, but was quietly pleased with myself once I had nailed the image. And I was especially happy that over the ensuing couple of minutes needed to capture the remaining shots of the panorama, no other train passed to ruin the view!

I love how this image has not just a view of architecture, but it has motion with the train passing, and a context – with the multitude of other details that together form an interesting narrative of an urban location. This is why London is for me such an endlessly captivating subject to photograph, I endeavour to capture not just a sterile view of static elements, but fluid moments captured in time, a living, breathing, working city, populated with real people who use, move in, and live it.
