Hornsey Rooftops and The City Skyscrapers. I captured this view over the rooftops of the north London neighbourhoods of Hornsey, Harringay and South Tottenham on the afternoon of last day of 2015. The sun was shining, and its position at this time of year, just a week after the winter solstice, is well south of west, so I was pretty much shooting into the light. Although this is normally not recommended, I am always ready for a challenge! So I took out my super sharp long telephoto  lens to compress together all of the elements in this composition. I then went back to my office and computer to work out how to coax out of these resulting images of glare anything meaningful. It was almost impossible to retain much colour information, so I desaturated the image and worked heavily on bringing out the mid tone contrasts. At the end of a long session, I was quite pleasantly surprised at just how interesting the atmosphere I evoked with this stark look, and how interesting also the composition with the wealth of architectural details eventually turned out. I try to avoid using zoom lenses as these tend to flare more than fixed or “prime” focal lenses; in this case it was a super sharp 300mm f2.8 lens, with excellent optics and very controlled flaring and ghosting even when shooting directly into the sun.

This image has an old world feel, perhaps due to the evocative, gritty surface texture, but also due to the repeating rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing lining the streets going laterally across the composition. The multitudes of rooftops, gables, church spires, cupolas, mullioned windows, and decorative brickwork create a wave like rhythm, interspersed amidst the scores of trees. Beyond loom the tall skyscrapers of The City, appearing to float like mirages in the distance.

Visible from left right is the Heron Tower (now Salesforce Tower), The Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe), the Cheesegrater (Leadenhall Building), Tower 42, the Walkie Talkie (20 Fenchurch Street), Citipoint, the Shard and the three Barbican Towers.
