The Oxo Building and its adjacent wharf on London’s South Bank just by Blackfriars Bridge, was originally built as a power station to provide electricity to the Post Office. In 1928 it was acquired and rebuilt by the Liebig company which specialised in meat extract products, as a cold storage site. They wanted to include advertising on the building, but as this was not allowed at the time, they came up with an ingenious plan to get around this restriction. They built a tower, with windows on each side designed with geometrical shapes which could be read as “Oxo”, which was the name of one of their products, still popular today, the Oxo beef stock cube.

The building was later abandoned for many years, but eventually was acquired by the Greater London Council in the late 1970s who handed it to a non-profit community group Coin Street Community Builders to run. This resulted in it being refurbished for mixed use, including art galleries and design shops at street level, with a restaurant and lovely public terrace on the 8th floor with breathtaking views and from which I have taken some of my favourite and most successful images. Such as this panorama.

The Oxo Building itself has justifiably won many architectural and refurbishment awards, it is so refreshing to see a building run for the benefit of the local community. And the occasional passing photographers!
