Panorama over Haringey Rooftops towards Canary Wharf

I captured this view: Panorama over Haringey rooftops towards Canary Wharf – on a very cold afternoon in January 2024. It is a panoramic view looking south over the rooftops of the north London borough of Haringey neighbourhoods of Hornsey, Harringay, Crouch End and South Tottenham. The long line of Victorian tenement buildings from middle left is the back of Hillfield Avenue, behind them is Church Lane and Tottenham Lane, and behind that runs the main North London train line from Kings Cross. These rows of housing and rooftops make the composition, a harmonious line leading the eye towards the distant sunlit skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. In between can be seen some tall buildings of Finsbury Park too. The church visible centre right is the Holy Innocents, Crouch End, on Tottenham Lane.

This is a companion piece to the panoramic view looking slightly more to the west towards The City. As separate images they overlap them a little, for compositional reasons. However they can be ordered as two separate but seamlessly continuous views of the same 3:1 panoramic proportions, as the original uncropped images extend on both side. They’d make as a pair an exceptional broad view over Hornsey.

I had photographed this view before – you can see it here, captured 8 years before – but I loved this new updated version even more as the winter light on this very cold day was spectacular. These bright winter days offer exceptional clarity, as the freezing temperature removes much of the atmospheric humidity and haze. I captured a series of views as the daylight ebbed away, however it took me an hour to warm up afterwards!

Using a powerful telephoto lens, in this instance a 300mm lens, can help create the geometrical interplay of planes, as seen here. The strong compositional lines, interspersed with the mass of details in the rhythmical flows of terraced houses and the rooftops, is enhanced by the telescopic compression of this expansive panoramic view, creating a pleasant graphical structure. To give an idea of the scale and distances in this view, the buildings at the top of the ridge are 2.25km away, Canary Wharf is 13km away, Shooter’s Hill behind the just visible O2 Arena is 20km and the distant hills beyond are over 30km away.
