I captured this panoramic view I call Canary Wharf Reflections on the last day of March 2021 as the tide ebbed away and the Thames settled down to become like a reflective millpond. The greatest stillness happens at that point of balance when the water is neither flowing out nor coming in; the River Thames being, of course, an estuary. At slack tide you can be lucky to get a beautifully still, silky surface, if there isn’t a breeze (the day I shot this was perfectly calm) and if there aren’t any boats disturbing the water. I love the terraced row of new but delightfully traditional houses along the shorefront of Rotherhithe at right, adding that warm glow of homeliness to the stark glass and steel modernity of the skyscrapers on Canary Wharf.
I was also trying to shoot a time-lapse of this lovely scene with the shimmering and wonderfully still water that night as the moment of slack tide approached - due just after 11pm that day - but then just as the water became a mirror, a police patrol boat zoomed past, disturbing the pristine surface of the water and ruining the picture perfect scene. And then just as it began to settle again about 15 minutes later, back came the same boat. Sometimes the stars just don’t align! So the shimmering time lapses I was attempting to capture were somewhat sullied, but the panoramic view I got, however, came out just great. I’m really happy with it!
