This panoramic view along the River Thames is one of my all time favourite views of London. Unfortunately, and very sadly, it is no longer possible to enjoy this almost perfect scene because of a large development built on the left hand side of this view along the edge and jutting out into the river.
I captured this panorama at low tide on a still evening in mid-May, with the rich, red crepuscular tones of late evening, just before night falls over London. The stretch of pebbly beach showing at left is only visible at spring tides around full or new moon.
Many of the most historic buildings and the most recent architectural icons of London are visible, from the glass Shard at left, the gothic spires and sweeping curves of Tower Bridge with St Paul’s Cathedral nestling behind, along with the newest skyscrapers of The City from the “Walkie Talkie” building (20 Fenchurch Street), the “Cheese Grater” (122 Leadenhall Street) as well as the “Gherkin” (30 St Mary Axe) and the “Heron Tower” (110 Bishopsgate).
The still water of the River Thames makes this a very tranquil image, with the surface shimmering with the colourful reflections from the city lights at this moment of slack water. The clear sky and beautiful colours of the last rays of light adds to the serenity of this unique view.
