This panoramic view of London I captured at dusk in November 2016. The day was fresh and clear but with a soft cloud covering; these conditions of diffused light can lead to immersive results, especially at this time of crepuscular light, between day and night.
This moment I knew immediately was wonderful that day. I waited patiently from one of my special viewpoints on the 17th floor of a tall buildings near my home. I wanted the city lights in the buildings to match the ambient light in the sky, so that the image remained balanced tonally and not too contrasty with a dark sky and blown highlights. With my trusty old but beautiful 500mm manual focus lens, and sturdy tripod carefully set up, I captured the series of images that I put together into this view. The moment was unique, I was up there on a terrace all alone in blissful peace, and I knew I had captured a unique moment.
The changing skyline and differing conditions never fail to spark my imagination, and each time I return with interesting results – this time was no different. I believe the skyline of London was at its best around the time of this image. The buildings were all unique, spaced sufficiently for them to become iconic geometrical shapes on their own right. Now the skyline has perhaps become just a bit too crowded with too many new skyscrapers jostling for the limited space.
