Panoramic view over Primrose Hill with Full Moon, an ultra high resolution panoramic image of the London skyline as seen at dusk on a summer evening, with the glowing lights illuminating the pathways that crisscross the park.
At left are the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and The City, and in front the curved rooftop of the Francis Crick Institute. Going towards the right can be seen the illuminated cupola of St Paul’s and the Shard, and on the right of the moon are the resplendent One Blackfriars building, the tall Capital Tower, the BT Tower and the London Eye. Amidst the trees at right can be seen the Snowdon Aviary of London Zoo. I also love the fact that there are clusters of people out enjoying the view or the warm evening, I think it brings to life the view!
This is a location that I return to often as I love the view from here, and on this occasion I had gone initially to shoot a timelapse of the full moon as it rose behind the Shard. But the light was so peculiarly rich that evening, the gloaming, crepuscular tones were just so beautiful, that I had to stop the timelapse and I concentrated fully on shooting this panorama. I am so glad I did!
Sometimes the glowing last embers of the sun’s rays illuminate the sky after it has slipped below the horizon, and this light can create stunning light contrasts as it reflects off shiny surfaces such as the gleaming glass and steel of the skyscrapers of the London skyline, against the darker, rich blue of the cloudless sky. This was one of those rare occasions. To have the full moon in shot was a bonus, and I carefully arranged the composition to have it in the centre of the frame, as the centre point of the scene.
I will continue to go back to Primrose Hill, but I don’t think I’ll capture a better view than this.
A technical note – I shot this on a high resolution modern camera but with a vintage Nikon lens – the superlatively sharp 105mm macro f4, which, unlike modern lenses with their coated glass and round shutter blades, creates the lovely starburst effect on the lights.
