Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe Night Panorama BW

This wide photograph of Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe Night Panorama was captured on the last day of March 2021. This is a panoramic photograph created by capturing multiple single images which are then blended together digitally to create a view of great clarity and sharpness. This panorama can be printed up to large format sizes up to 300cm across with no or minimal loss of sharpness.

As the tide turns, the Thames can settle down to become like a reflective millpond. The surface of the River Thames was perfectly still, until later a boat passed by and disturbed the mirror like water. At slack tide you can be lucky to get a beautifully still, silky surface, if there isn’t a breeze (it was perfectly calm the day I shot this photo) and if there aren’t any boats. The starkness of contrasty black and white with the richness of tones from inky black to twinkling pure white highlights creates dramatic cityscapes at night. The terraced row of new but delightfully traditional houses along the shorefront of Rotherhithe at right add a counterpoint to the stark glass and steel modernity of the skyscrapers on Canary Wharf. I was also trying to shoot a time-lapse of this lovely scene with the shimmering and wonderfully still water that night as the moment of slack tide approached – due just after 11pm that day – but then just as the water became a mirror, a police patrol boat zoomed past, disturbing the pristine surface of the water and ruining the picture perfect scene. And then just as it began to settle again about 15 minutes later, back came the same boat. Sometimes the stars just don’t align! So the shimmering time lapse I was attempting to capture was not with continually still, mirror-like water… see it here. However this high resolution panoramic view I got came out just I believe very well. I’m really happy with it.
