During a trip in December to photograph the Aeolian Island of Lipari, I went exploring up to a wonderful viewpoint high up a hill overlooking the main town and port of the island. There are super views all around but the most interesting views were towards Panarea and Stromboli, along with Panarea’s satellite islands. The day had been mostly wet and cloudy, but often these conditions offer the most interesting light and contrasts for photography, and the lovely water-laden and richly coloured winter Mediterranean sky was particularly evocative with the thick, dramatic clouds. I captured this image as a multi shot panorama, to create this ultra high resolution view: 10 shots digitally blended together, captured with a powerful telephoto lens, the phenomenally ultra sharp Nikon 300mm f2,8 VR lens. When combined with the Z7 camera with its industry leading image quality, the results are jaw droppingly delicious. Incredibly Stromboli is precisely 40km distant from here, but it seems like it’s right next to us, with the exceptional clarity of the dry and clean air of this time of year.
I love the tones, the atmosphere and the quiet natural beauty of this image of Panarea and Stromboli; to me it evokes the essence of Aeolian Islands as they are in their natural state, away from the busy summer tourist season. I was at this location for well over an hour waiting patiently for the light to be just right. As the bank of rain at left slowly drifted from out of frame towards Panarea, I knew the moment to capture this unique scene had arrived.
Immerse yourself in the immense detail and rich tones of Adam’s unique collection of panoramic views of Panarea, captured over the past 20 years.
