This captivating view I call Aeolian Sea was captured from the top of the cliff face above the pumice stone works on the island of Lipari. Below is an old iron and wood jetty which for many years was used to load the pumice stone excavated from the mountainside onto ships. It stopped being used in the 1980s and by the late 1990s it had completely disintegrated and collapsed. I photographed this in the mid 1990s, when it was still standing, and when the pumice excavations were still ongoing, thereby creating the pure white powdery residue which fell to the bottom of the sea, creating these mesmeric turquoise colours.
This evocative old jetty creates a breathtaking image with these scintillating colours. I am so pleased that I managed to get these shots before the structure disappeared. You can see the other version here
Shortly after taking this image the top edge of the cliff face collapsed, and I fell – luckily only a couple of meters onto a ledge just below. It gave the friends I was with quite a fright though!
Lose yourself in the Mediterranean and the very essence of the Aeolian Islands with Adam’s sunny and unique collection of the pristinely beautiful Panarea
