Old Jetty, Cava di Pomice
This is an old iron and wood jetty which for many years was used to load the pumice stone excavated from the mountainside of Lipari onto ships. It stopped being used in the 1980s and by the late 1990s it had completely disintegrated and collapsed. I photographed this in the mid 1990s, when it was still standing, and when the pumice excavations were still ongoing, thereby creating the pure white powdery residue which fell to the bottom of the sea, creating these mesmeric turquoise colours.
This evocative old jetty, captured from above the mountaintop, which rose like a cliff immediately behind it, creates and almost abstract image. I am so pleased that I managed to get these shote before the structure disappeared. You can see the other version here
