Lotte posing on a rocky outcrop. Lotte was the Norwegian traveller who came to explore Panarea and the Aeolian Islands. That year I had done many nudes in black and white so she was keen to do some too. I posed her on a rocky outcrop high up a cliff overlooking the sea. Although the sun was still quite high and the day was hot, humid and hazy, not normally the ideal conditions for photography, however this time it gave a nice heavy atmosphere, and a dreamy soft feel to the resulting image.

In the distance is the island of Salina. This simple shot has always been one of my favourite black and white images. The combination of feminine beauty and hard, sharp volcanic rocks, and the timeless infinity of the backdrop, has always appealed to me.

This was shot on Ilford film with a classic square medium format Hasselblad camera.
