This black and white image I call Steps and Shadows has been one of my most enduringly popular photographs. It was singled out with a prize for photography at the SAAC exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1998 and has continued to be popular since.

The simple graphic forms and interplay of light and shade within Steps and Shadows makes this image stand out, to me it is the epitome of black and white imagery; bold, dynamic, and on the verge of abstraction.

This was shot on black and white film with a classic 6×6 format Hasselblad camera.
