28th July 2021. I was sitting on the terrace, whiling away the afternoon and reading a book in the hot sun when I heard a loud, deep rumbling. I knew immediately it was Stromboli. I called the kids, ran to my room, grabbed my camera and leapt onto the roof. This is what I saw: a massive eruption. Nature in a spectacular show of its awesomeness. There was practically no wind at all on this sultry, steaming day so the volcanic ash cloud that burst out of the crater rose pretty much straight up. This is very rare to see!
The day was so very hot with high humidity so the sky wasn’t clear at all, so I had to work on the contrasts a little bit to bring out the clarity of Stromboli and the massive plume of smoke. I then I desaturated it a bit to return the hazy, atmospheric look, whilst retaining the immediacy of the island and the dramatic cloud. I think the balance is pretty much spot on here; I am very happy with the result!
