This Terrace, Arch and Deckchairs image is an architectural detail of the Hotel Raya in the island of Panarea. An evocative pyramidal structure built on a steep hillside overlooking the port from the late 1960s onwards, the cascading rooms and terraces of this marvellous hotel offer wonderful views, framed by breathtaking architectural details.
Few things are to me more evocative than wonderful architecture in a Mediterranean setting, where the context in interwoven into the whitewashed fabric of the building, where the setting and views are as important as the forms and function of the building itself. The Hotel Raya is regarded as one of the most famous, unique and iconic building of the Mediterranean, and a favoured place over many years of the summer jet setting tourists who flock to Panarea. It is reminiscent in many ways to the Canadian architect Moshe Safdie’s masterpiece Habitat which dates to around the same time.
It is certainly one of most breathtakingly beautiful places to be in the entire Aeolian Islands, and I have endlessly inspired by it, capturing details of its whitewashed cuboid geometries with my camera over many years.
Lose yourself in the Mediterranean and the very essence of the Aeolian Islands with Adam’s sunny and unique collection of the pristinely beautiful Panarea
