This image of a Winter Evening with Ship Docking I captured overlooking the port area of Panarea. I used a 15mm lens and a shutter speed of 30 seconds to smooth out the sea in order to impart the tranquil, quiet look that I envisioned. Of course the ship moved a little in this long time but I like this as it adds a little bit of life and drama into the otherwise still atmosphere of the setting that I purposely chose. Likewise the light trails along the jetty, which injects a sparkle of light as well as movement.

Winter for me is when the sea coastlines are at their most evocative. They are often empty, tranquil, with a melancholic atmosphere; revealing the beauty of their dark side whilst yearning the distant joys of the summer. Shooting with long exposures at twilight helps coax out the hidden tones, the quiet sounds, their secret character, their beguiling magic.
