Central Italy is blessed with a multitude of medieval towns perched on hilltops, and this ancient town Farnese Panorama is a fine example of them. Located in the area known as Tuscia in northern Lazio region, not far from the border with Tuscany, Farnese is built on the undulating plains and is surrounded by lush forests including the Selva del Lamone, just west of Lago di Bolsena.

Farnese can trace its roots back to the Bronze Age. The most notable family linked to this town when it gained importance and its independence from Orvieto from the 13th century on was the eponymous Farnese family. Ranuccio Farnese became banker to the Apostolic Camera, and established the family’s fortune. His grandson Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III in 1534.

Farnese is such a pristine example of a medieval town that it was chosen by director Luigi Comencini as the setting for several scenes of the hugely successful TV series based on the book Pinocchio, in the early 1970s.
