White Cliffs and Lighthouse – a view of the Beachy Head Lighthouse on the south coast of England.
As a fan of seascapes and coastline views, I had had this magnificent lighthouse on my radar for a while. I drove down to shoot this magnificent view in late January 2024, on a relatively still but slightly overcast day. These are often the best conditions for my preferred style of doing seascapes, using long exposures. These enable you to quieten the sea and to coax out the subtle colours, along with adding interesting skies with clouds drawn out by movement across the sky.
What was however a stil day in north London when I set out turned out to be very windy on the coast 100 miles away! Furthermore it had become cold and quite dark with thickening clouds and it even began to drizzle. Although I love these brooding skies with seascape photography, it meant I had to regularly check and clean the filter on my lens to ensure there would be no droplets of water on it. This image is composed of 4 individual shots digitally blended together, each of 1 minute exposure, so as to smooth out the sea, and to create an image of huge resolution. This would make a wonderful large format print for your walls!
